I can’t even begin to describe how proud I am of how she has turned this tragedy into something very special. Allison is married and has blessed me and my wife with a beautiful grand-daughter who is now 2 1/2 years old. Our second grandchild, a boy, is due October of this year. Allison will be naming him, “Sam” after Erin’s husband. It’s really hard for me to write abound my girls because all I do is start tearing up.

I wanted to share the above link, because I hope that the way I raised my daughters and shared so much of their childhood helped to develop them into the loving and giving women they are today. Ok, I can’t write anymore…

Photo

anti-teachings:

In honor of Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday, his daughter invited Jay Farrar (Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo), Will Johnson (Centro-Matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline), and Jim James (My Morning Jacket) to find lyrics from among Guthrie’s archives that spoke to them and put the words to music.

You can feel loneliness and heartache in every note of the Jim James-led “Empty Bed Blues.” The song is kept simple — just voices and acoustic guitars — to emphasize Guthrie’s lyrics about “stumblin’ home” and “singin’ the wrong kind of song.”

Hey, Woody Guthrie, but I know that you know
All the things that I’m a sayin’ and many times more
I’m a singin’ you the song, but I can’t sing enough
’Cause there’s not, many men that done the things that you’ve done

I went to see Camelot at the Sacramento Music Circus last night with a some friends. For those of you not familiar with the SMC in downtown Sacramento (I believe the official name is “Music Circus at the Wells Fargo Pavilion”), the stage and seating sections are set up in a circle, so you basically can sit anywhere in the “round” and have a good seat. It always amazes me how well the actors and singers do at moving around to sing to the audience in this type of theater setting. You would think that it would be awkward occasionally having the actors back to you as they sang to a different section of the audience, but for some reason, that doesn’t occur.

I was sitting in the “Inner Circle” seating section (rows F-N) which I found very comfortable. The “Golden Circle” section rows A-E seemed a might close to me and maybe a little to ostentatious for my humble upbringing. Unlike years past when the Music Circus was in an actual tent and usually pretty muggy inside, I was occasionally finding myself a bit chilled, so bring a light sweater when you come.

It has been years since I actually saw Camelot, and I must admit that I couldn’t even recall the story line before the evenings performance. All the better, as it almost seemed like I was seeing it for the first time. The cast of ‘Camelot” was led by Davis Gaines as King Arthur, Lisa O’Hare as Guenevere, and Sean Hayden as Sir Lancelot. I was only familiar with Davis Gaines as I have seen him before as the Phantom in “Phantom of the Opera”. Looking back at some other YouTube videos of Richard Burton and Richard Harris as the most notable King Arthur’s of past stage performances, I must say that I actually prefer Davis Gaines! His spoken inflections, diction and rich baritone singing and spoken voice just came together to be the best all-around King Arthur! That’s some pretty nice company you are in Mr. Gaines! Lisa O’Hare as Guenevere was also a strong overall performance. I was never really swept away by her acting or singing, but—-very good overall performance by Ms O’Hare. The least impressive of the main characters was Sean Hayden as Lancelot. He just seemed like he was maybe a little out of his league. His singing, was adequate, movement on state was sometimes a little clumsy, and his French accent was mostly irritating. I found myself really straining to understand what he was actually saying which really took away from the whole experience.

Looking back at previous YouTube videos of past stage performances of Camelot, I noticed that the costumes were far superior at the Sacramento Music Circus compared to even the Broadway version! Other Camelot versions just seemed pale in comparison—-so kudos to the costume design team!

And finally, the supporting music in the orchestra pit: I’ve seen musicals with recorded music and it just doesn’t do anything for me. There was an occasional violin out of tune, but 99.9 percent of the time, it was so refreshing to have live musicians in the orchestra pit playing behind the musical!
